What is Zonolite?

Zonolite is a brand of vermiculite attic insulation manufactured by W.R. Grace & Co. and sold widely from the 1940s through the 1980s. It looks like small, gray-brown pebbles or pellets and was poured loose into attic spaces.

The vermiculite used in Zonolite was mined primarily from the Libby, Montana mine — which was contaminated with naturally occurring asbestos. As a result, most Zonolite-brand vermiculite contains asbestos fibers.

If you have vermiculite attic insulation and aren't sure of the brand, treat it as Zonolite until lab-tested. The Trust applies to insulation that cannot be confirmed as a different brand.

ZAI Trust FAQ

Is the ZAI Trust still active?

Yes. The Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust became active in 2014 as part of W.R. Grace's bankruptcy settlement. The Trust is currently accepting claims. There is no announced end date for the program.

How much can I get back?

The Trust reimburses up to 55% of removal costs, capped at approximately $4,935. For a typical vermiculite removal project costing $6,000–$9,000, this means $3,300–$4,935 back in your pocket.

What if I'm not sure it's Zonolite brand?

The Trust applies to vermiculite that is Zonolite brand or cannot be confirmed as a different brand. Since Zonolite was the dominant vermiculite insulation product in the US market, most vermiculite attic insulation qualifies. We document the brand identification as part of our inspection process.

Can I file a claim myself?

Yes. Claims are filed directly with the ZAI Trust. We provide all the documentation you need — written contract, invoices, clearance certificate — as part of every vermiculite removal project. We can also walk you through the claim process.

How long does the claim process take?

Claim processing typically takes 60–90 days after submission of complete documentation. The Trust reviews claims in order of receipt.

Ready to get your vermiculite removed?
