Intact, undisturbed asbestos-containing materials are generally low-risk. The danger is disturbance — cutting, breaking, sanding, or demolishing ACMs releases microscopic fibers that can cause mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer when inhaled. The risk is dose-dependent and latency is long (20–50 years). This is why abatement requires containment and negative pressure.

Do I need to leave my home during abatement?

For most non-friable jobs (floor tile, siding), you can stay in another part of the house while the work area is sealed off under negative pressure. For friable work (pipe insulation, vermiculite, plaster), we recommend you and pets leave during active removal. We'll confirm the protocol for your specific project during the quote call.

A mandatory 10-working-day waiting period follows before abatement can begin. We handle the filing for every project — you don't need to do anything separately.

What was the April 2025 EGLE change?

Michigan launched the new MiEnviro Portal on March 24, 2025, and per-notification fees became required on April 2, 2025. Every regulated abatement project now carries a fee paid at notification filing. We include this fee in every abatement quote.

Most floor tile jobs are one or two days of on-site work. Lab analysis takes 3–5 business days. Then there's the 10-working-day EGLE notification window. Total elapsed time from 'yes, schedule it' to clearance is usually 2–3 weeks for planned renovation projects. What is clearance air monitoring?

After abatement, an independent industrial hygienist (not the abatement contractor) performs PCM air monitoring to confirm fiber counts are below clearance levels. You receive a clearance certificate — the permanent record that the work is done and the space is safe to re-occupy. Michigan Act 135 requires this be performed by an independent party.

Do I need to remove asbestos floor tiles before installing new flooring?

Not always. If the existing tiles are intact and undamaged, you can often install new flooring directly over them — that's encapsulation, and it's legal in Michigan when done correctly.
